Valder-Ree Valder-Ra

When I was a kid I learned right away never to tell my mom, “Im Bored!”  Her answer was always, ‘Oh I have a project for you; let’s go Clean Out your Closet!!” Oh man, that cured me quickly.  So I guess my mom’s been bored lately cause for that last couple of years, she’s been slowly cleaning out all her closets and cupboards and drawers.
Isn't that a funny word, cup-board with a P in the middle there.
And little by little, as she sorts through her cuPboards she passes stuff to me that she thinks I needs to keep.
Well yesterday she brought me, along with a bag full of other ‘treasures’ this Little Wooden Casket, I mean this little wooden Music Box that my Grampa Siemens had made me years ago.
How sweet, he made it for his little granddaughter just like the label says on the bottom of the caske music box.

And look, here’s the label inside the lid, “Der Frehliche Wanderer” The Happy Wanderer.  Huh.
After she left, I wound the box.
And lifted the lid.
 Oh my.
What a happy little tune, that takes me straight back to a straight-haired skinny little blond girl that sings somethings about a Knapsack. WHAT?!? A Knapsack music box from when I was a little girl? No Wonder I Love Packpacking and have been longing to wander, along the mountain track for as long as I can remember (which isn’t very long). Yoddel Eee, Yodddel Aa, Yodle ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha No, it’s VALDER.
“Valder-Reee, Valder-Raaaa, ValderRah Hahahahaha
A Knapsack on my back!!!”
Ok wait, is that right?  Does that Valder Ree nonscence really go with the Knapsack Song? And is the Knapsack song the one that’s in my coffi music box?
Well I looked it up and Look At This:
IT IS!!!!

The Happy Wanderer

I love to go a-wandering,
Along the mountain track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back. Chorus:
My knapsack on my back.

I love to wander by the stream
That dances in the sun,
So joyously it calls to me,
"Come! Join my happy song!"

I wave my hat to all I meet,
And they wave back to me,
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet
From ev'ry green wood tree.

High overhead, the skylarks wing,
They never rest at home
But just like me, they love to sing,
As o'er the world we roam.

Oh, may I go a-wandering
Until the day I die!
Oh, may I always laugh and sing,
Beneath God's clear blue sky!
Every Single Word of this song is exactly what I love and will now be the Theme Song on the Trail for me AND whether they like it or not for TJ and Jon and Ju Ju our Packpacking Pals.

So it’s my Grampa Siemens’ fault that I. Love. Hiking. so very much…

“oh may I always laugh and sing, beneath God’s clear blue sky!”
